Aural Story of the Week – Janelle Monae

Janelle Monae has been the toast of certain corners of the Internet this week – and it’s about time. Her first several releases were suites of an opera following an female android. Diddy, who recently signed Monae, had this to say:

Janelle Monae is one of the most important signings of my career.

Andre 3000, of Outkast added this:

Ms. Monae is one of the most enchanting voices of our generation. She’s a living singing babydoll. Darling…just darling. Ha!

And his bandmate, Big Boi, features on her bouncy new single, Tightrope.

Oh, and she’s from Kansas City.

Here’s a track from the android suite, “Sincerely, Jane”:

Left the city, my momma she said don’t come back home
These kids round’ killin each other, they lost they minds, they gone
They quittin’ school, making babies and can barely read
Some gone off to their fall, lord have mercy on them
One, two, three, four, your cousins is round’ here sellin’ dope
While they’re daddies, your uncle is walking round’ strung out
Babies with babies, and their tears keep burning, while their dreams go down the drain now
