Here are my favorite music picks from 2008 – a month late, and for no real reason other than my own enjoyment. I didn’t get to listen to too much music this year, so my choices were limited. But of what I got to listen to, here are my five favorite albums.
5. Blind Pilot – 3 Rounds And A Sound
One Red Thread is the only stand out song, but this is the only album I heard this year (besides the one at No. 1) worth sitting down to listen to from beginning to end.
4. Lil Wayne – Tha Carter III
Weezy’s weezy voice may be a gimmic, but it’s one that he uses well. From blowjobs to Katrina, this album packs as much variety as possible – not all of it good – and enough songs that are great to make it worth the bajillion sales.
3. Bon Iver – For Emma, Forever Again
Yeah yeah, he made the whole album in a cabin in the woods. Whatever. The point is that as Sasha Frere-Jones said more eloquently, Justin Vernon uses his voice better than anyone – except maybe Wayne.
2. TV On The Radio – Dear Science
A rocker throughout, this album is catchier and more consistent than Return To Cookie Mountain. ‘DLZ’ captures as much of the world’s anger over the past few years just as well as ‘Lover’s Day’ caputres the joy.
1. Girl Talk – Feed the Animals
Pure joy. It’s nothing more than fair use clips spliced together into one 40 minute dance spree. Try to stay sitting down when Gregg Gillis mixes M.I.A.’s ‘Paper Planes’ with – no typo – The Cranberries ‘Dreams.’
